Online Personalities and Comedians Overtake TV and Newspapers as Primary News Sources

A new study conducted by Ipsos for the Jordan Center for Journalism Innovation and Advocacy at the University of Mississippi indicates a notable change in how Americans obtain their news, with digital figures and humorists now serving as primary information channels. This survey, carried out in March, found that online personalities and comedians, especially those leaning conservative, are becoming more influential than established news organizations like television and newspapers. This shift is particularly pronounced among individuals who participated in the most recent presidential election, signaling a significant evolution in public information access.

The research unveiled that, excluding politicians, Joe Rogan was the leading news influencer, followed by Fox News commentators Greg Gutfeld and Sean Hannity, with Tucker Carlson and Ben Shapiro also ranking high. Only three individuals—Donald Trump, Joe Rogan, and J.D. Vance—garnered more than 10 percent of mentions. For those who supported Kamala Harris, late-night talk show hosts such as Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, and Jon Stewart were the most frequently cited news sources. The poll further revealed that nearly 70 percent of participants access news online weekly, compared to 55 percent for television and a mere 25 percent for newspapers, emphasizing the diminishing role of print media.

Professor Andrea Hickerson, Dean of the School of Journalism and New Media at the University of Mississippi, noted that the findings highlight the increasing impact of online content creators in the news landscape. Assistant Professor Steven L. Herman, Executive Director of the Jordan Center, added that opinionated personalities and comedians on these platforms often overshadow traditional journalists. This phenomenon, he observed, echoes historical trends where sensational and polarizing figures, like Mark Twain and Father Charles Coughlin, wielded considerable political influence. Among traditional media, Fox News, major broadcast networks, and CNN were the most popular, while Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram dominated as online news platforms. These results paint a picture of a fragmented media environment where individuals can selectively choose news sources that align with their existing worldviews, reflecting a growing skepticism towards established media institutions.

The evolving media landscape offers both challenges and opportunities, encouraging us to critically evaluate our news sources and seek out diverse perspectives. It underscores the importance of media literacy in distinguishing credible information from mere commentary, fostering a more informed and engaged citizenry capable of navigating the complexities of modern information streams.
