In an evolving digital entertainment landscape, Hulu is making a notable expansion into the video podcast arena, securing licensing agreements for a suite of popular audio-visual shows. This initiative reflects a broader trend among streaming services to diversify their offerings and capture a wider audience base, leveraging the increasing popularity of video podcasts as a compelling form of digital media. The strategic acquisition of new content is poised to strengthen Hulu's position in a competitive market.

Hulu Secures New Video Podcast Deals to Boost Content Library

In an announcement made on April 17, 2026, Hulu revealed its latest strategic content acquisitions, which include four new video podcasts. These additions are part of an ongoing effort to deepen its engagement with the expanding podcast market. Among the standout titles is the critically acclaimed comedy podcast Handsome, featuring the comedic talents of Tig Notaro, Fortune Feimster, and Mae Martin. This marks a significant move for Hulu into premium, talent-led podcast content.

Further enriching its catalog, Hulu has also secured three companion podcasts tied to popular television series. These include The Mess Around, a rewatch podcast for the hit show New Girl, hosted by Hannah Simone and Lamorne Morris; Prison Breaking, an extension of the popular series Prison Break; and That Was Us, hosted by This Is Us stars Mandy Moore, Sterling K. Brown, and Chris Sullivan. These series-centric podcasts are designed to engage existing fanbases and offer new entry points for viewers to connect with their favorite shows.

The integration of these new podcasts will begin with The Mess Around, launching on April 19, with subsequent shows to follow. New episodes of these licensed podcasts will debut exclusively on Hulu before wider distribution, creating an incentive for subscribers to access the content directly through the platform. This model is a continuation of Hulu's successful partnership with podcast network Headgum, which previously brought the advice podcast We’re Here to Help, hosted by Jake Johnson and Gareth Reynolds, to the service in February.

Lauren Tempest, general manager for Hulu & EVP, DTC Content Partnerships, emphasized the importance of these acquisitions, stating, “These podcasts have each built such a passionate fanbase, and we look forward to bringing them to an even broader audience on Hulu. Podcasts have become a strategic part of our content offering and as the lineup continues to grow, we’ll stay creator first and focus on delivering buzzy shows that drive cultural conversation.” Kaiti Moos, VP, content at Headgum, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the mutual benefits of the collaboration for creators and audiences alike.

This aggressive push by Hulu places it in direct competition with other streaming giants, notably Netflix, which has also been exploring the video podcast space. However, Hulu’s strategy appears more flexible, contrasting with Netflix’s more stringent requirements for its licensed podcasts, which often necessitate exclusivity over other platforms like YouTube.

The Evolving Landscape of Digital Entertainment

Hulu’s strategic foray into video podcasts signals a pivotal moment in the digital entertainment industry. The move underscores the growing convergence of audio and visual media, driven by consumer demand for diverse content formats. For audiences, this means a richer, more varied selection of programming, blurring the lines between traditional television, film, and digital-first content. For content creators, it opens new avenues for distribution and engagement, allowing them to reach broader audiences through established streaming platforms. This trend suggests that successful streaming services will increasingly be those that can adapt to changing consumption habits, offering integrated entertainment experiences that span multiple media types and cater to a wide array of viewer preferences.
